The following is from [Pigot 1823] and must be read in the the context of that date.

PENZANCE,

A CORPORATE town, and county of itself1, in the hundred of Penwith, 289 miles from London, seven from St. Ives, and ten from the Land’s End. By some writers, the name of this town is supposed to signify the “Saint’s Head,” and this opinion is supported by the circumstances of the “Baptist’s head in a charger” being the corporation arms. Others conceive it to have originated in its situation, and from thence called Pensavas, or the head of the channel. It is situated on the north side of Mount’s Bay. The streets are tolerably paved, and the houses in general handsome and convenient. There is a chapel of ease, dedicated to St. Mary, and a mother church at Maddern, or Madron, besides meeting houses for various dissenters, viz., methodists, presbyterians, baptists, quakers, and a jews’ synagogue. John Buller, Esq. of Morval, endowed a charity school here in 1711. Penzance is remarkable in history for being entered and burnt by the Spaniards in 1595, since that time it has gradually increased in population and extent, many persons being induced to settle in it on account of the cheapness of provisions, particularly fish, (of which there is a great abundance of all sorts) the mildness of the climate, and the fertility of the neighbouring lands. In all these respects, it is not surpassed by any other part of the country. The walks and rides in the neighbourhood are very agreeable, and the great variety of shipping, merchantmen, fishing boats, &c. constantly lying in Mount’s Bay, form a very interesting scene. Penzance pier has been considerably improved since 1812. Its length to seaward is nearly 700 feet, the depth of water is increased to twenty feet at spring tides, and fourteen feet at neap; it is capable of affording shelter to more than one hundred sail of vessels, and has a dry dock within it large enough to contain a ship of 500 tons burden. The pilchard fishing is carried on upon a very considerable scale; upon the western side of the bay, about a mile and a half distant stands the small fishing port of Newlyn, and a little farther the village of Mousehole. The corporation of Penzance consists of a mayor, recorder, eight aldermen, and twelve common councilmen. The market days are Thursday and Saturday. The fairs are March 25th, Thursday after Trinity Sunday, and Thursday before Advent Sunday. The population is 5,224.

ST. IVES

IS a borough town, situated on the north-west shore of Cornwall, adjoining the Bristol channel, in the hundred of East Penwith. St. Ives is a place of great antiquity, deriving its name from Iia, a religious woman, who came hither from Ireland about the year 460. It is now a very populous sea-port, It is uncertain when this town was first denominated a borough; it was fully incorporated by Charles the First, in the year 1639, which charter of incorporation was procured by Sir Francis Bassett, then member for St. Ives. This charter extended its influence over the whole parish of this name. The body corporate consists of a mayor, twelve capital burgesses, and twenty-four inferior burgesses; but a charter granted by James the Second, in the year 1685, the body corporate consists of a mayor, recorder, 11 capital burgesses, and an indefinite number of inferior burgesses. Four of these are justices of the peace, and hold a sessions; the mayor is coroner pro tempore. By the charter of Charles, the mayor acted as a justice of the peace for one year after the expiration of his mayorality; the senior burgess possessed the same authority; but by that of James, the judicial power was placed under the restrictions that have been mentioned; and the right of voting extends to all the inhabitants paying scot and lot. Entering the town from Redruth, it has a very respectable and pleasing appearance, all the houses being handsomely covered with slated roofs, and in general well built; but on descending into the town, the streets are narrow, irregular, and ill paved. the church is an ancient gothic structure, built about 400 years ago. There are also chapels for the methodists and calvinists. A school, on the Lancastrian system was founded in 1821, by Sir Christopher Hawkins, M. P., and is entirely supported by him. the pilchard fishery is the principal support of the town; the season commences in July, and continues till the latter end of November; the mode of taking them is by the seine and drift nets. There are 80 seines in St. Ives, each seine, with boats and materials thereto, is worth about £400; and also 40 drift boats with nets, each boat and nets worth about £120. During the last season (1822) from the 10th of October to the 22d, about 3,400 hogsheads were taken, each hogshead containing 2,000 fish, all of which are cured and sent to the Italian markets. Our limits will not allow us to enter more at length into the manner of taking and curing the pilchard. The market day is on Saturday. The fair is on the Saturday before Advent Sunday for cattle. The population of the borough is 3,526.
